Make Your Own Clutch Bag Hand Stitching, Sunday, 05/17/25, Noon - 5 pm, Washington, DC

Clutch Class is back, and this time you pick the leather color and decide if you want a zipper or a flap! Come learn to make leather goods and create your own vegetable-tanned leather clutch bag.

In this single-day workshop, you will either adjust an existing pattern or select from several pre-made patterns, then cut and stitch your own envelope-style clutch bag with an optional wrist strap and either a snap closure or a zipper.

This workshop will take place at Amend and Adapt Studios in Brookland, NE, Washington, DC, from noon to 5 p.m. Most students will finish their projects during the workshop. If it looks like you won't finish during class time, we will get you prepped to finish at home.

You will need to provide your own leather for this workshop!!!
You will supply a leather project panel in 3.5oz to 5oz vegetable-tanned leather, at least 11” x 18” (if you want a smaller or larger clutch, size down or up). If you need help sourcing your leather, reach out to Katie, and she can help you get the right panel for your project.

Skills learned in this workshop:

  • edge finishing (bevel, sand, burnish to a high shine)

  • hand stitching with or without a stitching pony

  • cutting leather with a blade, scissors, or a cutting die and a clicker press

  • optional pattern layout and modification

  • personalizing leather goods with letter stamps

  • using a snap and rivet setting machine

Tools and supplies provided by S&R for use during the workshop:

  • cutting mats

  • mallets and pounding boards

  • metal edge rulers for cutting

  • hand stitching needles and a variety of thread colors in .030 twisted waxed cord

  • pricking irons in 5mm (for making hand-stitching holes)

  • water-based adhesive

  • Tokonole edge fluid

  • edge beveling tools and burnishing materials

  • cardstock for making your pattern

  • thread in a variety of colors

  • snaps and swivel clips in antiqued brass

  • rivets in antique brass

  • YKK zippers in antique brass

Workshop tickets are non-refundable but transferable, so you can gift or sell your ticket to someone else if you cannot attend the class. Light snacks and water/sodas will be provided, and there are several nearby restaurants for a lunch break if desired.
